Bonnie Kaye/Stand-up
Hi, I’m Bonnie Kaye.
You may think jumping rope is just for kids. Well if you’re an adult
trying to get fit, it can do wonders for you too.
-----------------------------------------
bk & Liz:
bk: Why is jumping rope such a great fitness activity?
Liz: Well it really gives you an option to do something in the gym
or out of the gym, and is a great tool for people who travel and still
like to be physically fit.
-----------------------------------------
bk & Liz:
bk: Now a lot of people think, it’s just a fun thing for kids to do.
How do you make it into an actual workout, an actual cardiovascular workout?
Liz: Well, that’s a good question. If you look at boxers, who are very
fit athletes, they’ve been using it as a mainstay of their cardiovascular
workout for years and years.

Getting started is the hard part. You need to develop hand-eye coordination,
rhythm and efficiency. Your feet should barely leave the floor, your wrists
should stay low by your sides, moving in small, fluid circles.
---------------------------------------------
Liz:
Ironically, as you begin, and you’re not a very good jumper, you actually
burn more calories because you’re so afraid of tripping over the rope that
you jump a lot higher.
-------------------------------------------
bktrack 2
I’m sure I was burning lots of calories. Once you get it, you can burn
around 12 calories a minute. That’s about 200 calories in just 15
minutes. The key is lasting that long.
--------------------------------------------
bk & Liz:
Let’s say we’ve mastered the basics. What’s the next step?
-----------------------------------------------
bktrack 3
You can work your way up to more advanced moves, like the scissors
step, knee lifts, and even plyometric hops.
-----------------------------------------------
bk & Liz
bk: Okay, that’s a lot harder than it looks.
Liz: Yeah it is.
bk: It’s a great workout.
Liz: Yes!
