Bonnie paddles along the challenging Hudson
River
Kayaking was historically a cold-weather Eskimo survival sport...a way
of hunting between ice blocks in the cold Artic waters off Alaska.. But
now it’s a favorite recreational activity for millions of Americans at
any time of the year.
No matter where you are in the country, you can find a place to kayak,
even in New York City. Eric Stiller, the founder of Manhattan Kayak Company
says the type of kayak you choose should fit your terrain and skill
level.
Bonnie:
“There’s a wide variety of kayaks we have to choose from?
Eric Stiller:
“That’s right. You go from one extreme to the next. On one end is
very short maneuverable white water style kayaks for rivers and streams,
and the other one on the far side is a very long, narrow high-speed kayak
for big, open rivers, ocean, large lakes, and fitness kayaking.”
To put more “fitness” into your kayaking, practice proper paddling technique
by using your arms, shoulders, back and torso in unison. Add the legs for
even more power and efficiency.
Eric:
“there you go. Left, right, left, right.”
For better performance and safety, take a lesson from a qualified professional.
And if you’re a city dweller…
Eric:
“Bonnie, I’ve got a perfect kayak for you here in the city. Super
lightweight, it’s a folding kayak, and a great advantage is that the whole
boat fits into this bag.”
Bk: It’s folded up in there?
Eric: Exactly.
Store it in your closet or toss it in a truck or plane, and you’re on
your way. For Fitness Magazine, I’m Bonnie Kaye.
