“Hi, I’m Bonnie Kaye. Better sit down for this one. Here’s a workout you can do in a chair.”

Instructor Sandy Stoub jokes this is the perfect workout for couch potatoes. But working out in a chair has many benefits.

“The first obviously that comes to mind is the senior population. Those who have mobility difficulties and we’re trying to recapture their functional independence so that they can maintain their independent living. But certainly this is appropriate for persons with disabilities those who may be confined to a wheelchair either permanently or from a temporary basis.”

Or let’s say you’ve injured your knee or ankle, and need to stay off your feet but still want to maintain a certain level of fitness while rehabilitating your injury. The workout features three components: a warm-up to get the joints moving and improve flexibility, cardiovascular exercises which include knee lifts and kicks, and strength training, using either light dumbbells or resistance tubing. Of course, the more conditioned you are, the harder you have to work to get that heart rate up. But for many people, especially those who are overweight or deconditioned, it doesn’t take a lot.

“This is a non-challenging way to get started. Also sometimes people are afraid their balance and mobility might be affected. If you’re overweight and haven’t moved around a lot and are afraid you’re not going to know your right from your left, and in a chair doesn’t matter, so it provides a sense of security.”
