Story #179: Music Motivation

Welcome to Inside Fitness I’m Bonnie Kaye along with Alix Redmond. It’s awfully quiet in here. Something is missing. Alix: The music. Bonnie: And the motivation to get in shape. Many people have found that having the right music to listen to is the key to their weight loss success. Alix: I know that you can’t get people to come into a spin class unless you have great music. Music motivates people, you’ve gotta play what they like, it can either make or break your class. Bonnie: Or make or break your fitness routine.

And whether you’re into spinning, dancing, running or pumping iron, good music will help you get the most out of your workout.  Studies show those who listen to music during their workout tend to exercise longer, harder and generally feel their workouts are actually easier.  It’s not a matter of distraction, like watching television, but more a matter of enhancement.  The right tempo, mood and lyrics helping to stimulate your performance.

Digital audio players like the IPOD have revolutionized personal exercise along with downloadable music and easy to customize play-lists of your favorite songs. Today creating the perfect warm-up, cool-down, and killer cardio routine is simple and of course there’s nothing like hearing your favorite rock star live concert to help you though that last mile.
