Students making frinds and getting fit in a group treadmill class.

If you’re a little bored with your treadmill workout, or just not sure how to get the best results, a new  workout called “Trekking” is here to help.

Running on a treadmill can be a lonely experience—but not in this class. “Trekking” is a group treadmill workout led by an instructor. It’s a simple, yet effective way to get the most out of your time on this old work horse.

Exercise physiologist and co-developer of the Trekking program Terese Iknoian says that it’s just what the doctor ordered for those who aren’t getting the desired results from their fitness program.

Terese Ikonian/Trekking Developer:
“In many cases people get on and they kind of plod along for 45 minutes to an hour and they don’t really get the intensity they need to get the cardiovascular benefits or weight loss benefits or whatever it is they’re looking for.”

Good technique and posture are stressed throughout the class.

Terese Ikonian
“It allows them to use the treadmill in a much more effective way. They’ve got a coach, they’ve got an instructor who tells them hot to go a little faster, go a little slower, make their technique better, encourage them, motivate them, and you’ve got the social perimeters that go along with that too.”

The class utilizes interval training-- alternating between high and low intensity levels of work to really tax your body aerobically. This is done by increasing either the speed or elevation. And the good news is, the concepts you learn in this group class can be applied your solo workout at home or in the gym.
